FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen AG has named Porsche executive Juergen Rittersberger as its new head of strategy.

Rittersberger, 46, will take up the post Sept. 1.

He succeeds Thomas Sedran, who has moved to lead the parent company's commercial vehicles division.

Rittersberger joined Porsche in 2002, initially in strategic projects, before moving to the automaker's investment management unit. In 2010, he was named head of strategy at the brand, before adding the role of General Representative in 2015.

He studied information systems at the University of Mannheim in Germany before taking jobs in controlling at the German construction companies Philipp Holzmann and DIBAG Industriebau.
