Udhagamandalam: Musically novice? Yet want to take part in a musical event where you could sing? For children from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli, there is an opportunity on August 15.
At ‘Swatantra Geetham’ scheduled on August 15 to commemorate the birth centenary of the famed Carnatic singer D K Pattammal, children will sing together five Tamil patriotic songs popularised by the singer.

“A series of events are being conducted across Tamil Nadu to commemorate the birth centenary of the singer. Swatantra Geetham will be the highlight of them,” said Vijay Siva, Carnatic musician and member of organizing committee, DKP-100. “This is in a bid to take music and patriotism to the children. The committee has planned to rope in schools as well as children, who are musically untrained. It will be a great opportunity for children,” Siva told TOI.

Nithyasree Mahadevan, Carnatic singer and granddaughter of Pattammal said: “If Amma were alive now, she would be turning 100 in March, 2019. These programmes are to pay tribute to her unparalleled work in the field of Carnatic music.”

Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the celebrations on March 17, 2018. Children interested could register their names through http://dkp100.org/dkp100. The registered children will be asked to listen to the songs, learn and sing along the extent possible.
