Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna had to sweat it out to defeat St Anthony’s High School, Majorda 4-3 via the ‘sudden death’ and enter the semifinals of the Subroto Mukherjee Cup U-17 Inter-School football tournament played at artificial grounds, Fatorda on Monday.

The teams played a goalless draw during the regulation time. In the tie breaker the teams were locked 3-3 each and in the ‘sudden-death’ Fr Agnel Mutupurpose Higher Secondary scored the winning shot to make it 4-3.

Both the teams had some good opportunities to score during the game play, but the strikers at both ends failed to find the mark.

Fr Agnel could have scored in the last minute of play, but a good shot taken by a striker hit the cross bar.

St Anthony’s High School keeper Angues Godinho brought off six saves in either session of play, three in the first half and three in the second session.

Fr Agnel who had a much better side last year, struggled to find the mark this season.

Strikers Sweton I Rebello and Alloid Colaso looked inefficient taking raids for Fr Agnel.

Though Fr Agnel had better possession of the ball in the first half, St.Anthony’s measured up to the challenge with lot of determination and eagerness to take their rivals head on as they displayed total transformation in the second session.

Had St Anthony’s strikers taken the chances that were created by Anlon, the Majorda team could have scored atleast two goals. But it didn’t materialise as strikers, Shane Mascarenhas and Aryan Dias simply messed up with all the good chances they had.

In the tie breaker the teams were tied 3-3. Fr Agnelo scored accurately through Kanaiya Kamti, Elly Fernandes and Shawn Da Silva. St.Anthony’s High School  scored through Discon Godinho, Shenoy Costa and Pascoal Gomes.

St Anthony’s High School Shane Mascarenahs failed to find the mark while Fr.Agnel’s Multipurpose Higher Secondary’s Shawnwal Carvalho bulged the nets accurately making it 4-3 in sudden death.

In the other match, Holy Spirit Institute, Margao defeated Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda 3-2 to also move into the semifinals.

Holy Spirit’s Mevan Dias scored a brace while the other goal was scored by Aditya Salgaocar.

In the last match, Mae Dos Pobres High School, Nuvem defeated The Kings School, Sao Jose de Areal  2-0 to storm into the semifinals of this tournament.
