Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived at the venue of the farmers’ rally organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Midnapore town in Paschim Medinipur district.

The Prime Minister tool a flight to the Kalikunda Air Force Station on Monday and proceeded to Midnapore Police Line by helicopter, and reached the Midnapore college ground, the venue of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) rally, by road.

Mr. Modi will address Krishak Kalyan Samavesh (farmer welfare rally) organised by the State unit of the BJP to congratulate him for raising the minimum support price for kharif crops.

“Prime Minister's rally after [BJP] president’s visit indicates that Bengal is one of our top priority States in the Lok Sabha poll,” Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said.

“Mr. Modi will highlight what the Government has done for the farmers but we also expect him to talk about farmer’s distress in the State,” Mr Ghosh earlier told The Hindu.

Apart from Mr. Modi, BJP’s national general secretary and the party’s observer in Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya, and Union Minister Babul Supriyo will also attend the rally along with State BJP leaders.

The cadres of Communist Party of India-Marxist [CPI-M] are expected to wave black flags to the Prime Minister, CPI-M State Secretary Surjyakanta Mishra said.

District leaders of Trinamool Congress [TMC] however refused to comment if they too have similar plans to get closer to Prime Minister’s convoy to protest.

Security has been tightened and “no one will be allowed to get close the Prime Minister’s convoy” said senior police officials.
