Kovai Courtallam to remain closed until further notice

Several trees were uprooted as heavy wind accompanied by rain lashed Siruvani and surrounding areas on Saturday night.

Kovai Courtallam remained closed for the 20th day on Sunday following heavy inflow of water.

Officials with the Forest Department said that nearly 50 trees were uprooted in Siruvani, Kovai Courtallam, Poondi, and Vellingiri areas of Pooluvampatti Forest Range on Friday night. Around 25 huge trees came down following incessant rain near Siruvani.

An electric line along Kovai Courtallam Road was cut off after an old teak tree fell on it. The line that supplied power to tribal settlement at Seengapathi, was restored on Sunday evening.

Pooluvampatti Forest Range Officer C. Palaniraja said that five teak trees were among those that came down on Siruvani Road in the rain and wind on Friday night.

The officer said that other trees were uprooted inside the forest.

Rain and wind also wreaked havoc in forest areas of Poondi and Vellingiri. Agricultural fields in Poondi, at the foothills of Vellingiri, were destroyed in the wind.

Kovai Courtallam would remain closed until further notice, Mr. Palaniraja said.
