Coimbatore: The Election Commission of India on Monday conducted a day-long cybersecurity awareness programme in the city to educate electoral registration officers (EROs).
As many as 150 EROs and assistant EROs, along with polling officials from Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh , Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep and Puducherry attended the workshop.

An official, who participated in the programme, said that they have been uploading voters-related information in the National Voters Service Portal (NVSP) where voters can register a new voter, delete the deceased ones, do name and address correction and upload photos. “The website is designed in such a way that nobody would be able to share the details of the voters,” the official said.

Explaining that there is a separate election-related management portal for the officials to carry out the confidential works, the official said that the real threat lies where the voters’ portal is linked with the officers’ portal. “Apart from enhancing knowledge on computer and internet, it is also important to educate officials about the threats of uploading confidential information in internet and the ways to handle it safely,” he added.

During the programme, the officials were trained about cyber threats and the ways to handle the information safely. They were also trained on how to implement electoral norms safely in the internet and to ensure cybersecurity.
