Rain and heavy wind on Sunday morning wreaked havoc in different parts of the district, bringing down trees and damaging houses.
In the city, two trees on the court premises toppled over.
Government buildings
The roof of the government pleader’s office was destroyed and case files are suspected to be damaged.
One tree fell at the Directorate of Public Instruction, while another that was in a precarious condition was cut down.
A house was damaged after a tree fell on it at Mel Thonnakkal.
The Fire and Rescue Services cut and removed trees that had fallen at Vazhayila Christ Nagar road; Jawahar Nagar, Kowdiar; behind Sankrit College, Palayam; Mulavana Junction, near Anadiyil Hospital; Veerabhadra housing colony, Pattom; and Mullassery, Marathoorkadavu.
In Neyyattinkara taluk, water entered some houses in the Pozhiyoor locality. The families have not been moved out, though arrangements have been made to relocate them if need be.
The shutters of the Neyyar Dam were raised by 1.5 ft in the wake of the rising waters, and people in the nearby areas have been asked to remain vigilant. The shutters of the Aruvikkara dam too were opened, the Collectorate control room said. In Varkala, five houses were damaged after trees came down on them. Trees that fell on roads were cleared to restore traffic. In Chirayinkeezhu taluk, a tree fell on the house of a four-member family, destroying it. The house of 65-year-old Baby and her three children at Nagaroor was destroyed. The four were moved to a relief camp at Darshanavattom Gurudev Upper Primary School. The panchayat authorities said a new house for the family would be considered.
At Anchuthengu, local people organised a road blockade in protest against the alleged unscientific construction of the breakwater in the region.
Two fishermen from Anchuthengu had drowned in the Muthalapozhi estuary two days ago.
Blockade
The blockade, which went on till late at night, was called off after the protesters were assured that talks would be held on the issue on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Kerala State Electricity Board, in a statement, said it had suffered widespread loss in all the districts in the rain and wind lashing the State. Trees had toppled over in many places, destroying posts, lines, and transformers. Electricity had been disrupted owing to this in many places. KSEB staff were working to restore electricity, the statement said.
