PANAJI: Union minister for electronics and information technology,
Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday announced that the center would set up a national institute of electronics and
information technology (NIELIT) in Goa to enable industry-oriented training and certification to be provided.
The minister further said that the institute could be operational in a month’s time if the state government provided a ready campus where it could function from.
“Digital skilling is going to be the future. We have NIELIT centers all over the country but Goa does not have one,” Prasad said. “I declare that Goa will have a NIELIT center for skilling.”
Prasad made the announcement at the ESG complex in
Panaji after releasing the Goa IT Policy in the presence of chief minister
Manohar Parrikar and minister for information and technology Rohan Khaunte among others.
The Union minister further asked the chief minister and Khaunte to identify a campus so that the institute could start immediately.
He hinted that if the state government opted to start the search for vacant government land, the process would take longer. “If the state can provide us a campus space, it will be enough. . We will take care of the rest. Making provision for land will take time, so if you provide us with built up space, the NIELIT center will start within one month’s time,” Prasad said.
There are already 16 NIELIT centers across the country. Plans are now on to start several more of them. Setting up an NIELIT center in the state will provide digital skilling and training to IT professionals in Goa.
