Minister opens bridge across the Manimala river

Contractors should be permitted to carry out their work freely and without fear, sticking to the guidelines prescribed in the PWD Manual and the authorities should take action in case of lapses on their part, Public Works Minister G. Sudhakaran has said.

He was inaugurating the newly constructed bridge across river Manimala on MC Road at Kuttoor, near Thiruvalla, on Monday.

The licence of the contractor who erred should be withdrawn, he said, adding that he was referring to such issues not to rebuke or disgrace anyone but to ensure the fruitful utilisation of public money for the development of the State.

He said efforts would be made to resolve the problem of waterlogging of the railway underpasses on PWD roads in Thiruvalla Assembly segment.

He said MC Road modernisation along the Chengannur-Ettumanur stretch was one among the 12 projects undertaken by KSTP and eight of them would be completed by August.

Mr. Sudhakaran said the World Bank has agreed to take up the Punalur-Muvattupuzha Road modernisation as a new project.

The Minister said certain quarters had raised protests against Water Resources Minister Mathew T. Thomas in the Thiruvalla bypass issue without understanding the facts. The issue could be termed as the biggest corruption in the unscientifically designed bypass, he said.

A committee chaired by the Chief Secretary had prepared its correct detailed project report. The work on the bypass would be tendered soon, he said.

He said, but for the earnest efforts taken by Mr. Thomas who is also the local MLA, the issue could not have been sorted out.

Mr. Thomas presided.
