Soccer fever peaks in city

As the FIFA World Cup fever reached its peak, soccer lovers went all out to live up to the spirit of the final played between France and Croatia on Sunday evening. In a bid to cash in on to the event, restaurants tweaked their menus naming delicacies after soccer stars while stores rained special discounts. Cancelling regular movie show, a multiplex made arrangements to show the match live. Bakeries were flooded with orders for soccer ball-shaped cakes. Stores and cafés put up flags, posters and cut-outs of football stars.

Rain, rain, don’t go away

The Rain God has finally smiled on the city. Dark clouds have covered the horizon bringing a much-needed relief from a prolonged dry and sultry spell. Incessant rains brought the maximum temperature drastically down to 30-33 degree Celsius, giving a pleasant dash to the weather laced with a flavour of green surroundings. Locals living on outskirts like Amausi, Sarojininagar and Alambagh are a bit luckier to get a heavy spells, For the people living within the city and the centre like Gomtinagar, Indiranagar, Aliganj and Hazratganj, they have to be happy with light to moderate showers.

Not plastic, but fantastic

Plastic became a passe in Lucknow since Sunday. Oxo-biodegradable bags are the next new thing as a replacement to low quality polythene bags. Looking just like regular plastic bags, environment-friendly biodegradable bags will be the future. On exposure to oxygen and sunlight, they begin to undergo oxo-biodegradation. These bags can be as good as new for about 90 days, but after being exposed to sunlight, they degrade completely, leaving behind just biomass and water. The concept will go a long way in saving environment.

A ‘ground-breaking’ event

Much on the lines of investors’ summit held in February, an equally glitzy ground-breaking ceremony will mark this month’s last Sunday. Who’s who of India Inc along with none other than PM Modi will land in Lucknow for the ceremony for about 64 projects on July 29. Mukesh Ambani of the Reliance Group, Nandan Nilekani, Kumaramangalam Birla of the Aditya Birla Group, Subhash Chandra of Essel Group and Adani Group’s Gautam Adani and a number of Union cabinet ministers will descend on City of Nawabs.
