NEW DELHI: Indianness is the religion of Congress because it is an idea which encapsulates the concept of communal harmony, the Congress today said in response to Prime Minister
Narendra Modi's attack calling it a party that stood only for Muslim men.
"BJP's religion is only about power. Wearing a mask of religion, all they do is satisfy their lust for power. They should understand that to temper with the communal fabric of the country is not part of India's culture," Congress spokesperson
Randeep S Surjewala said in a press conference today.
The Congress spokesperson was responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attack last week on the Congress and its president
Rahul Gandhi over his remarks reported by an Urdu daily.
"I read in the newspaper that the Congress president had said that Congress is a party of Muslims, and there has been a discussion on this for the past two days. I am not surprised as when
Manmohan Singh was PM, he had said that Muslims have the first right over natural resources," Modi said on Saturday in a rally in Uttar Pradesh.
The Congress spokesperson further added that BJP is the new face of East India Company, which ruled India by implementing the 'Divide and Rule' policy.
The Congress has been up in arms against the PM Modi ever since his remark alleging that the Congress chief had told an Urdu daily that his is a party for the Muslims.
On Saturday, reacting to the PM's remarks, Congress's communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala had said the prime minister was lying by using the names of Rahul Gandhi and former PM Manmohan Singh.
He said the prime minister looks "desperate" sensing defeat in the next polls, and was seen spreading the "poison of hatred and division" in the society.
He alleged that PM Modi was blinded by his desire to take revenge on Rahul Gandhi.
The BJP and the Congress have been sparring after the Urdu daily reported that the Rahul Gandhi who met Muslim intellectuals earlier this week had told them that the Congress was a party of Muslims. The Congress has dismissed the media report as a "rumour" and asserted that it was a party of 132 crore Indians.
