You never have a chance to sink into the passing scenery with Extreme Railway Journeys host Chris Tarrant. The veteran British broadcaster has, in this journey across the rail networks of five nations in the Balkans that were formerly part of Yugoslavia, occasion to jovially grumble about different currencies, station graffiti, and "the unmistakeable early morning whiff of backpacker". But there's genuine information and timely context. On an electric tram in the once besieged Sarajevo a woman explains the reality of a society collapsing: "Some of my friends, who I loved, dearly, turned out to be monsters."
