MUMBAI:
Maharashtra's Modak Sagar, one of the biggest lakes supplying water to Mumbai, started overflowing at 3.05 pm on Sunday following incessant rains.
Modak Sagar is the second lake to overflow after Tulsi, which started overflowing on July 9. It's located in
Thane district on the
Vaitarna river.
Modak Sagar supplies 440 million litres of water to Mumbai. Mumbai's daily water requirement is over 3,750 million litres which is brought from the seven catchment area lakes.
As on July 15, the seven lakes were 56% full. Mumbai needs 14.47 lakh MLD water in all the lakes to go without water cuts for the coming year.
Last year, Modak Sagar had started overflowing on the very same day - July 15 - at 6.32am while in 2016 it had started to overflow on August 1 at 10.28 am.
