Coimbatore: The city corporation has drawn up an ambitious plan to beautify the Race Course Road and make it more pedestrian-friendly under the smart city project.
The three-kilometre stretch will be made into one of the model roads in the city along with DB Road and TV Samy Road at RS Puram, a senior corporation official said. “We will create a seamless pedestrian pathway and for that, obstructions like TNEB junction boxes, garbage bins and parking in between the pathways will be removed.”
The junctions will be made 90 degree in order to reduce the speed of vehicles, the official said. “All the utilities will be shifted underground. Zebra lines, garbage bins and speed-breakers will be set up for the convenience of pedestrians. Adequate parking lots would be set up for the convenience of both morning and evening walkers, who drive to the leafy stretch. Trees along the stretch will be retained and more will be planted. The place provides a lot of opportunities for landscaping,” he told TOI.
Rain water harvesting systems will be set up on the stretch. Automatic irrigation systems will be used to check wastage of water. “Public toilets and drinking water facilities will set up along the pedestrian tracks. We plan to install motion sensor street lighting. The lamps will dim whenever there is no movement and will glow only when people are present. It will reduce power consumption to a large extend. Also vehicle sensors will alert the public whenever a vehicle goes in and out of the VIP residences in the area,” the official said.
In order to make the place accessible for the differently-abled people, tactile flooring will be installed on the stretch and a separate parking space will be reserved for them.
The civic body had sent a proposal for the work to the high-power standing committee and the committee has given some guidelines on reducing the cost without compromising on the features, the official added.
