Nagpur: Children of the inmates of the Nagpur central jail were felicitated for their encouraging performances at SSC board examination and also at the graduation level at a function within the premises of the prison. The programme was organized jointly by the prison department and Tata Trust, Mumbai.
Following a Memorandrum of Understanding (MoU) between Maharashtra prison department and Tata Trust in January last year, there had been numbers of activities being held with the aim of fulfilling the objectives of welfare, correctional and rehabilitation programmes for the inmates. The latest programme was part of the collaborative efforts.
Apart from honouring the children for bright academic performances, school and college stationary materials were also distributed among the family members of 29 inmates. Around a dozen children of eight women inmates were among the ones who received the school and college stationary materials.
Following the MoU, one co-ordinator and four social workers had been deployed to organize various rehabilitation and welfare programmes including the home visits of the inmates. Helping the children of the inmates to get admission at different educational institutes, provide financial aids for studies and such assistances.
DIG, Prison, eastern region, Yogesh Desai, who was present along with jail SP Rani Bhosale, other prison officials and Tata Trust employees, welcoming the efforts said the initiative to help the talented children of the inmates would only augur well for the rehabilitation plan and bolster it. “Earlier, the prison department was able to only conduct rehabilitation plan for the inmates but now with the engagement of the Tata Trusts we can also reach out to their families,” said Desai.
