BENGALURU: An Andhra Pradesh-based software engineer Prabhakar, who runs a startup here and began snatching gold chains following severe financial losses, was arrested on Friday. “He claims he sustained losses of around Rs 15 lakh and cleared debts adding up to Rs 10 lakh. We need to check his audited accounts and other documents to verify it,” police said.
Suspecting his involvement in more than 20 chain snatching cases, police produced Prabhakar before a local court on Saturday and took him to 14 days’ police custody.

In the second week of June, there was a sudden spike in chain-snatchings in southeast division. Special teams were formed to nab the miscreant, who CCTV images pointed to a lone rider on a gearless scooter. “Unlike other chain-snatchings in which two men operate, Prabhakar operated alone,” police said.

Techie caught after 5km chase

Prabhakar's modus operandi was to target a single victim walking on a wide road with less traffic.

The special teams traced the accused to Sector 1 HSR Layout. “Four constables on two Cheeta motorbcycles chased him for more than 5km. While negotiating a turn, Prabhakar rammed into a parked car and fell down. We shifted him to hospital with a fractured leg,” police said.

“He was discharged on Friday and we took him into police custody. We need time to question him,” investigating officials said.
