UP govt made Yoga compulsory in all govt schools

The Yogi Adityanath government has made Yoga compulsory in all Uttar Pradesh government schools from class 9 to 12.  It has been incorporated as a part of physical education.  UP Deputy CM Dr Dinesh Sharma said, “Yoga has been made part of the physical education and will be implement from this session which commenced from July 1. It will help students develop physical and mental strength. Students from basic education who are also willing to learn yoga are welcome.”

“A theoretical exam will also be taken in which questions related to Yoga will be asked. This issue shouldn’t be seen as a political move as it will benefit students. We are also teaching judo and taekwondo to girl students to develop physical strength. Yoga shouldn’t be related to any religion,” added Sharma.

As per the gazette notification issued by the state government the order for Yoga education will be enforced by the UP secondary education board. A written examination of 50 marks for three hours will be held along with the annual examination.   The students will be awar4ded grade A, B and C in yoga papers which will be included in the mark sheet and the certificate issued by the secondary education board.

The notification said the objective of the Yoga education is all round development of the personality and inculcation of the moral values among the students.  The Yoga education will also develop leadership capabilities, good conduct, humility, courage, discipline, self respect, restraint, tolerance and respect for all religions.

Responding to deputy CM, Samajwadi Party national spokesperson Sunil Sajan said, “The BJP government is imposing its saffron agenda in all spheres of society. This government will continue to rake one such issue after another as all sections of society including students are unhappy with the government because of misrule and anarchy that is increasing every day.”

Sunni cleric and member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli said, “If students are made to learn yoga for physical exercise then we have no issues. However the government should ensure that no religious activities should be taught to students during the yoga exercise.”
