Man dies, car 'split in two' after hitting trees on Sunshine Coast

A male passenger has died after an overtaking car veered off the road, crashed into several trees and split in two on the Sunshine Coast on Friday night.

Police said a car was heading west on Maleny-Kenilworth Road in Witta at about 8.40pm when the driver lost control and crashed.

A 22-year-old male passenger died at the scene while the driver, a 39-year-old man, was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital with minor injuries.

“The car has overtaken a number of cars and then left the roadway and impacted a number of trees," a Queensland Police Service spokesman told 7 News.

"The car has subsequently been split in two; it’s a bit of a harrowing scene in actual fact, it’s not one we come across all that often."

“All we can keep saying is the same message: give yourself plenty of time to get home and if you’re going to drink, don’t drive.”

Forensic Crash Unit investigations were ongoing.
