Industries Minister’s statement contradicts State government’s claim of signing 3,294 MoUs worth ₹8 lakh crore in 2016

Industries Minister Subhash Desai in a written reply to the Assembly on Friday said that his department inked 2,850 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹3.93 lakh crore at the Make In India Week held in the city in February 2016.

The State government had earlier claimed that it had signed 3,294 MoUs worth ₹8 lakh crore that would generate three million jobs. The Industry Department has said that so far 1,036 projects worth ₹73,506 crore, providing 2.08 lakh jobs, have been completed; 523 projects worth ₹1.66 lakh crore, generating 8.23 lakh jobs, are under way; and 761 projects worth ₹1.43 lakh crore, providing employment to 1.70 lakh people, have completed the primary stage.

Mr. Desai was replying to questions over the status of industrial projects in the State. The Minister said that it was incorrect to claim there was a slump in setting up startups in Mumbai and the rest of the State as the startup policy was sanctioned only in February this year. He said, “The government has formed the Maharashtra State Innovation Society to implement the startup policy.”
