State Government on Thursday blamed the main Opposition parties – Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)- for delay in completion of Bansagar irrigation project in Mirzapur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the project in Mirzapur on coming Sunday. The project was under construction for the past 20 years.

“PM will inaugurate the 171.80 kms of the Bansagar irrigation project for Mirzapur and Allahabad districts, covering 1,50,132 hectares of agricultural land and benefiting 1.70 lakh farmers”, disclosed Cabinet Minister for Irrigation, Dharampal Singh.

Besides, the project will also enhance agriculture production by 5.54 lakh tones, he claimed. The PM’s programme would be held at Chandaipur village on Sunday morning at around 10:30 am.

Interestingly, Singh, who was talking to media persons here on Friday afternoon, accused the previous SP and the BSP for delaying the Basnsagar irrigation project and even termed these two parties as anti-farmers.

“The project commenced in 1997-98 with estimated cost of Rs 330.19 crores but after 20 years it was completed with a cost of Rs 3420.24 crores.

The people of the State should know how these two parties did not work for the farmers leading to cost escalation,” he told reporters at Lucknow on Friday.
