Political reservation for BCs demanded

more-in

A delegation of the National Backward Classes Welfare Association met President Ram Nath Kovind in Delhi on Saturday and urged him to ensure that Constitutional amendments are brought about so that Backward Classes get their due share in politics.

Association president R. Krishnaiah told Mr. Kovind when the 73rd and 74th amendments were made for reservation in local bodies for SC, ST and women, the option of reservations to BCs was left to the State. In the absence of a strong law, the courts are asking the State Governments to reduce the quantum of reservation for BCs to stay within 50%.

He said there was “some merit in limiting reservations” to 50% in education and jobs but not for political posts, adding political parties were not giving tickets to “genuine people”, but only to the rich and those who can spend money in elections. He said letters written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 36 political parties in this regard have been sent.
