MOTIHARI: Former Turkauliya west panchayat mukhiya Mukhtar Alam Ansari (40) was allegedly beaten to death near a mango orchard under the Turkauliya police station area in East Champaran on Saturday. His death has sparked tension in the locality.

His brother Jafar Alam alleged that Mukhtar was beaten to death by policemen near their house, but police officials claimed he died of heart attack. He was rushed to Motihari Sadar hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Hundreds of his supporters assembled there and demanded inquiry into the case.

East Champaran SP Upendra Kumar Sharma said there was no external injury mark on Mukhtar’s body and it seemed he died of a heart attack. “The truth will come out after getting the post mortem report only,” the SP said, adding the three policemen, who had conducted raid on the gambling den in the mango orchard near Semaratola were sent to the police lines from Turkauliya police station.

The police sources said the Turkauliya police had got information about gambling in the mango orchard and three policemen conducted raid to nab the gamblers. As soon as the gamblers saw the policemen, they started running away. Mukhtar fell down and died on the spot.
