Taking a cue from the Hindi Prachar Sabha, the Tamil University in Thanjavur is set to establish an ‘Tamil Valar Maiyyam’ (Tamil development centre) to promote the regional language.
Chennai:
Sources in the University said six co-ordinators have been appointed to oversee the efforts in this regard.
There are plans to establish 100 such centres across the world in a phased manner, for which works is expected to start rolling later this month.
Stating there is a belief that learning Tamil language is tough as it has too many letters, the source said the University has come up with a simplified curriculum. The ‘Tamil Valar Maiyyam’ would dedicatedly work towards promoting the language across the world.
Sources said the centres would be established at New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Moreh in Manipur, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Bhopal, Ahmedabad and Andaman island in the first phase. There are also plans to set up the centres in 16 foreign nations including Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
“The State government has already sanctioned a fund of Rs 2 crore for establishing the centres and also has planned to provide Rs 2 crore every year for the project,” said University Vice-Chancellor G Bhaskaran. “Tamil would be taught through their respective mother tongue so that they can easily learn the language. The teaching module has also been formed accordingly,” he added.
