NEW DELHI: Trust the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to come up with the most inappropriate! A day when the nation got busy celebrating Hima Das’ gold medal, the parent body became the target of angry citizens for posting a tweet with a reference to the athlete’s inability to express herself in fluent English.
“#HimaDas speaking to media after her SF win at #iaaftampere2018 @iaaforg. Not so fluent in English but she gave her best there too. So proud of u #HimaDas Keep rocking & yeah,try ur best in final!,” it read. Followers on Twitter reacted immediately, criticising the AFI for mentioning what was irrelevant and unnecessary, in the context of Hima’s achievement.
The AFI later posted an apology and clarified that they didn’t mean to mock Hima’s English, but were only trying to say that the sprinter is not scared of anything on or off the track.
“Forgiveness from all the Indians, you have been hurt by one of our TWEET! The real purpose was to show that our runner is not afraid of any difficulty, inside or out of the ground...Once again sorry for those who are angry (sic).”
