PANAJI: Nestled in the foothills of the Sahyadris, the busy town of
Valpoi has recorded the highest rainfall among all 13 centres so far, as the seasonal total here is nudging towards the 2000-mm mark.
Till Saturday morning, the centre for measuring rain in Valpoi recorded a total rainfall of 1953.7mm (76.9 inches), in less than 40 days since the onset of monsoon on June 8.
As is usual, Valpoi, located towards northeast Goa and about 43 kms from Panaji, is the wettest place in Goa so far during the four-month monsoon season.
Pernem, which has recorded 1866.0mm (73.4 inches) till date, follows closely behind Valpoi, while Ponda with a total of 1766mm (69.5 inches) is third in quantum of rainfall.
“Valpoi being located in the foothills of western ghats receives heavy rainfall during the entire season,” an official from the India meteorological department, (IMD) Panaji said.
During the initial monsoon period, the coastal centres of Panaji,
Mormugao and Dabolim were ahead of hinterland areas.
While
Old Goa has recorded a total of 1746.2mm (68.7 inches) of rainfall so far, Sanguem, another centre in the Sahyadri foothills has recorded 1686.6mm ( 66.4 inches) and Sakhali 1611.7mm (63.4 inches. Panaji was ahead of other coastal centres with 1534.6mm (60.4 inches) recorded so far.
Six centres have received 1400+, with Mapusa recording 1491.9mm, Dabolim 1479.7mm, Mormugao 1456.2mm, Canacona 1446.8mm and
Quepem 1433.5mm. Margao has had a total of 1408.6mm (till Friday), which recorded the lowest total among all centres. The figures for an entire 24-hour spell, till Saturday, were not available.
