For over two decades, the century-old University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) has been functioning with a large number of vacancies in its teaching and non-teaching staff, which has prevented it from getting accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation.
Addressing mediapersons on Friday, Bangalore University Vice Chancellor K.R. Venugopal said that while there are 200 sanctioned posts in UVCE, only 96 teaching posts are currently filled. The college, which has a student strength of around 4,500, had hired around 70 guest faculty members to conduct classes, and all vacant posts will be filled within a year, he added.
Another 40 of the total 126 non-teaching posts are before the government. Prof. Venugopal said that the university will pursue the matter with the government to ensure that all the teaching posts are filled at the earliest.
He also suggested that the only constituent engineering college of Bangalore University should get autonomous status, as Maharani’s college, which is around 50 years old, had been given the status of Cluster University.
Both Bengaluru Central University (BCU) as well as Bangalore University (BU) are claiming ownership of UVCE. The Kori committee that looked into trifurcation of Bangalore University has stated that it should belong to BU, but BCU has staked claim as the college falls under its jurisdiction.
Prof. Venugopal also said that the syllabi of the B.Tech/B. Arch of UVCE has been revised and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been introduced. He said that the syallbi of M.Tech would also be under CBCS.
