A delegation of Congress leaders from the state met party national president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Saturday and apprised him of preparations for urban local body polls and the 2019 general election.

They also told Gandhi that some former Congress leaders were keen to rejoin it.

Party Uttarakhand in-charge Anugrah Narayan Singh, party state president Pritam Singh, leader of opposition in the state assembly Indira Hridyesh, former chief minister Harish Rawat and former party state unit chief Kishore Upadhyay were part of the delegation.

Anugrah said they told Gandhi that some old Congressmen were keen on returning to the party fold and their entry might strengthen the party ahead of the local body polls and next year’s general election.

“Rahul Gandhiji asked us to convene a meeting in Dehradun on July 22 to form new committees so that the party organisation can be strengthened. He also asked us to facilitate rejoining of the former Congress leaders,” said Anugrah.

Hridyesh said Gandhi asked them to work hard so that the party can make a spectacular performance in the local body poll and the general election.

“Gandhi said the time was ripe for the Congress to bring back old party workers to its fold and defeat the BJP by adopting aggressive strategy,” said Hridyesh.

The delegation also informed the party chief about indiscipline by some Congressmen in the state.
