‘Escort’ move lands education dept in a soup

The Education department’s overzealousness on its plan to appoint  ‘Escorts’ for the students of Government Girls Inter College ( GGIC) based on Rajpur Road following receipt of eve teasing complaints has landed it in a soup.

The proposed move has triggered serious questions over the law and order situation in the capital with the college being located at stone throw distance from the State Secretariat.

If things were so there, the vulnerability of the girls elsewhere in the capital and the State can easily be understood, say the observers.

On Thursday when asked about the regular eve teasing complaint made by some girls who said they were made to undergo the ordeal nearly daily while they were on their way to the institute, the secretary school education Bhupinder Kaur Aulakh had said that the department would provide escorts to such girls to ensure their safety.

She had added that such escorts could be members of the girls’ families and they would be paid by the department for this.

Quizzed over the complaint of the girls of GGIC Rajpur Road on Friday, the State Government’s spokesperson Madan Kaushik defended the education department’s ‘prompt action’ on the same and in the same breath said that   the law and order situation in the State is very good, a Statement which sounds to the observers as blatantly self-contradictory.
