McDonald's is pulling salads from roughly 3,000 restaurants spread across 14 states - primarily in the U.S. midwest due to an outbreak of cyclospora infections possibly linked to the fast-food giant.

According to a warning on the company's website - the voluntary decision was made "out of an abundance of caution" and only impacts salads - not sandwiches that contain lettuce.

Health departments in Iowa and Illinois announced investigations earlier in the week after learning people with the food-borne illness all had one thing in common: eating salads at McDonald's before coming down stomach problems.

By late-Friday, health officials in Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota reportedly confirmed cases as well.

More than 100 people have become ill so far.

Several outbreaks of the parasite-induced illness have been seen in recent years, especially during the summer months.

Those past outbreaks were linked to imported fresh produce.

McDonald's is rushing to get fresh salads out to its restaurants by switching to a new supplier.

It hopes to do so within a week.
