An accused in a red sanders smuggling case, who had allegedly attempted suicide while being transferred to a prison on remand, died while undergoing treatment at SVIMS here on Saturday.
According to sources, Haji Valli (40), hailing from Tirupati, was arrested by the Gajulamandyam police a couple of days ago for his reported involvement in red sanders smuggling. While the police officials were shifting him from Gajulamandyam to Tirupati on Saturday morning, the latter requested to use bathroom facilities during the trip. The police officials then halted briefly at the reception centre abutting the Renigunta police station. The accused reportedly consumed the cleaning chemicals kept in the toilet.
The officials rushed him to the Ruia hospital and from there to SVIMS, where he died while undergoing treatment.
