'Tapt Kund' to be revived

The fabled hot water spring known as Tapt Kund on way to Kedarnath shrine that nearly disappeared after the natural disaster 2013 would be revived and restored to its old glory. The Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat while reviewing the progress of development works of Kedarnath Assembly constituency on Friday directed the officials to hire consultants to locate the spring that was buried after the Kedarnath deluge. The CM said that the irrigation department should be made the nodal agency for locating and restoring the fabled hot water spring of Gaurikund.

Later talking to the newsmen, the State Government’s spokesperson Madan Kaushik said that the nodal agency has been authorised to contact and take services of agencies like Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Central Ground Water Department for the restoration work. The Minister informed that the hot water spring has been traced at a distance of around 200 metres from the original spot.

He added that the intention of the State Government is to restore the spring to its old glory.

The area to be developed around the spring would be somewhat bigger than the old one, he said.

Known as ‘Tapt Kund’, the natural geyser of Gaurikund was very popular with the pilgrims’ on way to Kedarnath shrine. The place derived its name from Gauri, the wife of Lord Shiva. It was the spot where people used to take holy dip en route Kedarnath.

It might be recalled that the Union Minister Uma Bharati during her Kedarnath Yatra had expressed wish to restore ‘Tapt Kund’ which disappeared in the flash flood 2013.
