BJP maligning Mother Teresa organisation, Mamata alleges

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday attacked the BJP for conspiring to malign the Missionaries of Charity (MoC) an organisation founded by late Mother Teresa.

Days after a nun from the Mothers Teresa’s Order was arrested by the Jharkhand Police on charges of selling a child Banerjee attacked the BJP for hatching a “deep rooted conspiracy” against the MoC.

Acting on a complaint from the Child Welfare Committee, the Jharkhand Police had earlier arrested a sister and an employee of the Ranchi-based Order even as they tried to sell a child born to a minor inmate of Nirmal Hriday, a shelter home run by the MoC.

“In the face of it this looks like a deep-rooted conspiracy by the BJP to malign Mother Teresa’s organisation,” Banerjee told reporters.

“One or two persons may commit a blunder but for that you cannot blame the whole organisation. We know what MoC which was set up by none other than our own Mother Teresa has done for the people. This is a conspiracy and deserves condemnation,” she maintained.

Earlier she tweeted: “Mother Teresa herself set up Missionaries of Charity. And now they are also not being spared. Malicious attempts to malign their names. The Sisters are being targeted. BJP wants to spare no one. Highly condemnable. Let MoC continue to do their work for the poorest of the poor.”

It is another matter however that , Banerjee’s conspiracy theory apart, an MoC spokesperson expressed “shock at such news” and offered to “look into the allegations against the accused employees with all seriousness.”

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das had already ordered a probe into the incident by the Jharkhand State Child Protection Commission even as the police rescued two more children from the vicinity of Ranchi.

The police had swung into action after a senior Child Welfare Committee official filed a complaint against a Nirmal Hriday employee for allegedly selling a minor to a couple from Uttar Pradesh.
