Teen critical after random stabbing at Sydney Woolworths

A teenage boy is in a critical condition after a random stabbing attack outside a supermarket in Sydney's inner west.

The 16-year-old boy was in the carpark of Woolworths in Balmain with his brother about 6.50pm on Thursday when he was attacked.

A witness told Channel 9 she initially thought it was kids mucking around when she heard a commotion.

"Then I heard him just scream out 'I've been stabbed, I've been stabbed, help me'," she said.

"I walked over and there was blood on the floor."

Emergency services rushed to the scene, and found the boy with stab wounds to his upper body. He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

It's believed the boy had surgery overnight, and remains in a critical but stable condition.

Detective Inspector Gary Coffey said police were "very keen" to speak with the teen once his condition improves.

"It's a pretty ferocious attack, and it’s certainly not something that would normally occur in this area," he said.

Inspector Coffey said police do not believe the teen knew his attacker.

“I can’t be certain about whether anyone else was threatened by the offender in this instance, but what I can say is that no one else has been injured," he said.

Police believe a man and a woman could assist with their inquiries.

Police described the man as being of Caucasian appearance, 182 centimetres tall with ginger hair. He was last seen wearing a red jacket. Police do not yet have a description of the woman.
