HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad high court on Thursday sought to know the stand of Telangana, its panchayat raj officials and the state election commission on a petition seeking categorisation of 34% reservation earmarked for BCs in the panchayat elections. Telangana MBC Association general secretary P Asaiah filed this plea stating that only the categorisation of reservation would help the most backward among the BCs who are recognised by the state in A, B, C and D categories.

Senior counsel A Satya Prasad told a bench of Chief Justice T B Radhakrishnan and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan that though the facility of categorisation has been extended in education and employment, the same has not been extended to panchayat raj sector. The bench said Constitution recognises one composite BC class. It said however it would examine the issue keeping in view provisions of Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, Article 243 of Constitution and other provisions.
