18 injured as speeding truck hits bus

Coimbatore: As many as 18 people were injured after a speeding truck rammed the omni bus they were travelling in on L&T bypass road near Irugur junction on Thursday night.
According to traffic investigation wing (East) of the city police, the accident took place when the bus was heading to Ernakulam in Kerala from Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh with 16 passengers on board. “They were returning home after admitting children to a college in Kuppam,” an official said.

When the bus neared Irugur junction on L&T bypass road, a speeding truck hit the bus, which overturned in the impact. The passengers raised an alarm and other motorists sprang into rescue operations. When alerted, the city police also reached the spot and joined the motorists.

The 18, including the driver and conductor of the bus, were taken to two private hospitals at Neelambur and Singanallur. “All of them escaped with minor injuries,” the official said.

Traffic police have registered a case against truck driver and further investigation is on.
