CHENNAI: Metrowater officials disconnected supply to 67 city households after they were found to tap water illegally, using half break horse power (bhp) motors. Supply will not be restored to the houses for the next three months.

According to officials, 9 of the houses were in Tiruvottiyur; one in Royapuram; 16 in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar; 8 in Ambattur; 10 each in Anna Nagar and Teynampet; 5 in Kodambakkam and 8 in Adyar. Violators will also have to pay a penalty of 10,000 and 7,500 for reconnection. "Their mistake will cost them nearly 20,000 to regain Metrowater connection," the officer said.

An area engineer said if two houses on a street use the illegal motors, supply to the other houses will be affected. Now a days, the motors are readily available, said the official, citing a case in Choolaimedu where residents used submersible pumps, which they could spot only after a long search.
