Chandigarh With 30-40 body donations received each year by the authorities concerned at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), the number of body donations since last four years have seen a considerable rise as compared to the number a decade ago.Along with the rise in the number of body donations, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), which is the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation(ROTTO) for the North-Indian states has also seen a rise in the cadaver organ donations with almost 35 cadaver organ donations received this year so far. The number of people registered with the Department of Anatomy, PGIMER to pledge their bodies has also shot up to almost 4,000.Talking to Daily Post, Dr Daisy Sahni, head of Department of Anatomy, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said that the number of body donations received year ranges between 3040, which is adequate as per the requirement of the department.

“There is a massive change in the mindset of people now. People are very happy with being involved n the noble cause. Many people believe in body donations over the earlier religious aspects,” said Dr Daisy Sahni. Recently, the body of a 76-years-old man Manmohan Singh was donated by the family members to the Department of Anatomy, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).Sharing about the procedure after receiving body donation, she briefed that the body received are used for teachings, and the doctors who want to use new teachings carry out research for various experimental outcomes. According to the doctors, once the authorities at PGI are approached for body donation, a holistic approach is exercised to receive the body from the relatives. Also, a Christmas tree is presented to the chaperones. A memory lane has also been set up in the corridor of the department. The authorities of the department extend their gratitude by informing the public about the body donation. These gestures towards the donors and the relatives inculcate a sense of proximity with them, said a doctor from the department.Along with the body donations, cadaver organ donations, which are generally in case of being deaths, have also seen a positive number this year. As compared to 26 and 27 organ donations in 2015 and 2016 respectively, almost 35 donations have been received so far this year. Handowned cadaveric workshops are being conducted every 7-8 years where doctors from all over the country, and all surgical departments participate in these workshops.
