The Herald News announces its 2018 lacrosse/boys' volleyball all-scholastics

The Bishop Stang boys' lacrosse team made its deepest state tournament run in school history, while Durfee, the lone boys' volleyball team in our coverage area, captured its first-ever Big 3 championship. Here, we take a closer look at the all-scholastics from boys' and girls' lacrosse, as well as the Hilltopper boys' volleyball team.

LACROSSE

Boys

ADAM AMARAL (Tiverton): Only a sophomore, Amaral finished the season with 31 goals and 24 assists and was named first-team all-conference. A two-year starter, Amaral broke his fibia on Thanksgiving Day during football and still managed to be ready to go for the lacrosse season opener. "He's a kid who just shows up and does what he's supposed to do," said Tiverton coach Shane Parker. "I probably heard four or five words from him all year."

GRIFFIN TETLEY (Tiverton): One of only two seniors on the team, Tetley finished with 94 ground balls as a defense/midfielder this season. He did finish with three goals on three shots, but his main goal was anchoring a strong Tiger defense. "He missed a couple of games for us," said Tiverton coach Shane Parker, "and our team was completely different without him. He is the complete athlete."

RILEY SCALES (Bishop Stang): Bishop Stang's senior attackman, Scales led Bishop Stang with 58 goals and also contributed 12 assists for the Spartans, who clinched  a berth in the South Sectional semifinals for the first time in school history. Scales was also named The Herald News' Lacrosse Player of the Year.

CALEB IKKELA (Bishop Stang): A repeat Herald News boys' lacrosse all-scholastic, Ikkela had himself another outstanding lacrosse season. The junior attackman had 55 goals to go along with 22 assists for a team-leading 77 points. Ikkela was also a league all-star.

ALEX GOVONI (Bishop Stang): The Spartans' senior goalie, Govoni is a repeat Herald News all-scholastic lacrosse player. This season, he helped propel the Spartans to the South Sectional semifinals with a 6.5 goals against average in 19 games.

TIM MANLEY (Bishop Stang): A junior midfielder, Manley had a very strong season for the Spartans, who reached the South Sectional semifinals for the first time in school history. Manley put up 35 goals and chalked up 17 assists for 52 points this year.

COLIN LAWRENCE (Bishop Connolly): Despite his team going winless this season, it certainly wasn't tough to make a case for Lawrence to earn an all-scholastic spot. The Cougar goalie averaged an astonishing 25 saves per game and had nearly a 65 percent saves percentage. Lawrence was also named a league all-star.

Girls

MADISON HALSTEAD (Bishop Stang): Only a junior, Halstead makes her debut as a Herald News lacrosse all-scholastic after an appearance as an all-scholastic in the fall season as a field hockey player. Halstead, a midfielder, led the Spartans with 32 goals and also collected 12 assists.

NORA MARKEY (Bishop Stang): Like her teammate Madison Halstead, Markey is a first-time lacrosse all-scholastic, but is no stranger to all-scholastic awards as she was a winter all-star for the Bishop Stang basketball team. Markey chipped in with 29 goals and added 10 assists this lacrosse season.

JANE REDDEN (Tiverton): The Tiger midfielder and team captain, redden racked up 36 goals and 16 assists. A three-year varsity starter, she is a two-time all-division selection.  "Jane comes to practice and works hard everyday," said Tiverton coach Rachel Motta. "She's a true leader on and off the field, a vocal leader that picks up the team and keeps them motivated." She will be attending St. Michaels College in the fall.

RACHEL PARE (Tiverton): A midfield draw specialist, Pare finished the season with 16 goals 14 assists. Pare was a team captain,a  four-year varsity player and three-year starter.  She is also a four-year varsity player on the field hockey and basketball team. "Rachel is one of the most coachable athletes I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching," said Tiverton coach Rachel Motta.

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

JOE CAMARA (Durfee): A four-year player, Camara was Durfee's go-to player the past two years and turned himself into an excellent all-around player. Camara led the team with 224 kills this season, was the team's best passer and a very good jump server.  Camara was a two-year captain and a two time Big 3 all star.  He was also Durfee's 2018 male athlete of the year.

CAM BRANCO (Durfee):  A two-time Big 3 all star, Branco took his game to new heights as a senior as he recorded 552 assists.  He finished his career with 1,030 assists and became only the third Hilltopper volleyball player to record 1,000 career assists.  Branco was this year's team MVP, leading the Hilltoppers to their first outright Big 3 championship in program history. 

DANNY KEYES (Durfee): A junior, Keyes is a two-year starter, who led the team in blocks with 79 and was second on the team with 220 kills.  Known for his blocking skills, Keyes was a force at the net in the hitting department, many of his kills in highlight form.  Keyes was also a Big 3 all star.
