A 45-year-old woman was killed and two others were injured after being hit by a speeding motorcycle near Ambalamukku on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Jyothi Lakshmi, 45, of Nedumcaud. The incident occurred along the Ambalamukku-Kowdiar road near the Narmada junction around 1 p.m.
Jyothi, a Kudumbasree worker, and two of her colleagues, Shalini, 30, and Thulasi, 50, also of Nedumcaud, were crossing the road when they were hit by the motorcycle.
According to the City traffic police, while many vehicles stopped to let the pedestrians cross, the motorcyclist, Hansar of Vazhayila, failed to follow suit and eventually knocked down the women. Though the injured were rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital, Jyothi succumbed to serious head injuries sustained in the accident. The other injured have leg and spinal injuries.
Hansar and his friend Ananthu, who was riding pillion, also sustained injuries after being thrown off the vehicle. They have been admitted to a private hospital in the city. Jyothi Lakshmi is survived by two children. The traffic police have registered a case.
