2 teachers involved in corporal punishment terminated

The incident of two teachers having indulged in corporal punishment was reported in a Government run residential school in Koriya district. The victim children were also locked in a room for three hours. One of the parents had then lodged a complaint with police against two teachers involved in incident and has been named in the report on Thursday. Police aresearching for both teachers as they are reported to be absconding from the school.

Meanwhile, orders for termination of both teachers from service have been issued by school administration after the school internal disciplinary committee probe.

As per information provided by Yashwant Rajwade from Baikunthpur, after the incident came to light, parents rushed to the school. Meanwhile, district collector also received the information on which he directed district education officer to rush to school to probe the incident on Wednesday evening itself.

Already the government directives exists that school going children should not be meted out corporal punishment at any level even the verbal abuse.

As per details available, three students of class seventh (names not being revealed to conceal identity) on Sunday night in school premises during power failure were playing. Due to playing in darkness, the number plate of a car parked was broken and a scratch was also seen. The car is reported to be owned by teacher B. P. Gupta (named in FIR).

One of a student, on Wednesday reported the matter to the teacher, who after lunch breaks, took to thrashing the three students all along to his residential quarter. He continued it after shutting them in a room due to which they received injuries. He then left them in the room locked for next three hours.

After the children were released by teacher, one of them contacted his parents on cellphone and briefed him about the incident. The parents rushed to the school. It was after they registered their anger over the incident, the children were brought out.

Officiating Principal Gyanprakash Khes, then took the children to City Kotwali police station. Medical examinations of children were conducted by police with help of doctor.

In the statement to police, children reported that along with teacher B P Gupta, one more teacher Jiyatu Kumar Chakravarty had also beaten them up. One of the children is fatherless.

The other teachers over the incident stated that the teacher involved in incident is from Bhaiyyathan and had recently joined in school. He is short-tempered.

Principal S Shrinivas Rao when contacted said that he is presently in Raipur for a high-level meeting. The incident information has been received over the phone. The disciplinary committee consisting of school staff conducted the preliminary probe and found that the both teachers were guilty. As the school hostel and teachers residential building is same, they had taken the children to their room. Both the teachers were appointed on contract in first week of July only. One of them is TGT Maths.

After the disciplinary committee report came, with permission from the higher officials, also present in Raipur meeting, the service termination order was issued to both the teachers.

He said that school administration would not tolerate any corporal punishment in school premises and stern action would be taken.

The police have already accepted the complaint of parents of children and based on it FIR has been registered. The section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 343 (Wrongful confinement for three or more days), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC have been imposed on both the teachers. Police has also imposed Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015 section 75 (not to reveal the identity of children, parents or school) in the registered offence. Police has started search for both, stated to be absconding after the incident.
