SHAHJAHANPUR: An angry alcoholic husband allegedly shot his wife dead after she refused to cook egg curry for him. The incident occurred at Devdas village of Shahjahanpur under Roza police station on Thursday. The victim, Mangesh Shukla (30) refused to cook egg for her husband Navneet, 33, because it was a Thursday. Navneet then took out his father’s licenced gun and shot her dead. An FIR has been registered against Navneet under section 302 (murder) of IPC and police arrested him on Friday. He was sent to Shahjahanpur district jail after being presented in the court of the chief judicial magistrate.
“Mangesh was married to Navneet 12 years ago and the couple had three children. Navneet was a farmer and had a few acres of land in the village. He lives in the same house with his parents. His children had gone to school while parents had gone to see the doctor at the time of the incident. The FIR against Navneet was registered on the complaint of Anand Shukla, elder brother of Mangesh,” said Jasveer Singh, station house officer of Roza police station.

On Thursday afternoon, Navneet returned home drunk and demanded egg curry for lunch. However, Mangesh turned down his demand and the couple had an argument, after which Navneet walked out of the house. A few minutes later, he returned home, took out his father’s pistol, shot Mangesh in the back and fled.

On hearing the sound of gunfire, locals immediately rushed to the house and found Mangesh on the floor, injured. They immediately called an ambulance and police but Mangesh died before she could be brought to hospital.

After getting information about the murder, senior officers including senior superintendent of police S Chinappa and additional SP (ASP) Dinesh Tripathi arrived at the village and spoke to family members of the victim. The murder weapon has also been seized from the spot, officers said.

ASP Dinesh Tripathi told TOI, “The children and parents of the couple were not at home at the time of the crime. The accused husband was under the influence of alcohol at that time. He has been arrested and he has expressed remorse for his crime. The couple’s children have been handed over to Navneet’s parents.”
