COIMBATORE: Disaster management training programme here turned into a tragedy when a 19-year-old girl, forced to jump from the second floor of her college building, died after her head hit the sunshade of the first floor.
The incident took place on Thursday evening in a private college near Narasipuram in the district. The girl, N Logeshwari, was one of the 20 students being trained to jump from buildings during emergencies.
A second-year BBA student, Logeshwari was a native of Nathegoundenpudur, near Alandurai.
In a video that has gone viral, the girl is seen being pushed by the National Disaster Management trainer from the height, when she showed signs of anxiety about jumping down.
Logeshwari, who suffered grievous head injuries and a cut on her neck, was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), but succumbed to injuries on the way.The police have booked the trainer, R Arumugam, for pushing the girl from the height. The college had invited Arumugam to train the students in disaster management.
The video, recorded by students, shows students jumping one by one from the second floor. The trainer is seen pushing Logeshwari, who showed signs of anxiety. Within seconds, her head dashed on the first-floor sunshade. Though she was caught in the rescue net being held by students, she suffered grievous head injuries. Logeshwari was rushed to a private hospital nearby, where doctors referred her to the CMCH. But she succumbed to injuries on the way.
After the chilling video went viral, the police decided to book Arumugam. Coimbatore Rural SP Pa Moorthy said that he came across the video in which the trainer is seen pushing the girl.“Officials have been rushed to the CMCH for inquiry. After inquiring with the students, the trainer will be booked under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code,” said Moorthy.Rural police sources later confirmed that a case has been registered against Arumugam.
