WAtoday Weekender: Our five best things to do this weekend in Perth

Friday, finally Friday. Did this week not feel like it took forever? Maybe it's just us.

Well, as it is every Friday (since we started this several weeks ago) here's our top five picks of what to do and where to go.

There's something here for everyone, from families looking to keep the kids busy in that last maddening weekend of school holidays, to gigs for those looking to get out and dance away the winter blues.

Children’s workshops

It’s definitely winter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get to the city and enjoy a bunch of free activities — to round out the school holidays, there’s a bunch of fun to be had at the Winter Fest dome at Yagan Square.

On Saturday there’s a WA Ballet workshop and a Bizircus drop-in circus workshop, while on Sunday, Libby Hammer performs her award-winning interactive kids’ show.

Bizircus will also be at the dome on Sunday, so there are plenty of opportunities for children to get down and enjoy some circus-themed fun.

PNAU

Australian electro legends PNAU are coming west on the back of their latest release, Changa.

Famed for past hits such as Wild Strawberries, Baby and, more recently, Chameleon, the always-colourful act includes Empire of the Sun frontman Nick Littlemore among its founding ranks.

PNAU perform at Metropolis Fremantle on Saturday night, tickets from the group’s website, pnau.tv.

Everything old is new again

Formerly known as — or FKA — is all the rage in music. The artist formerly known as Prince; Nick Murphy FKA Chet Faker; Superego FKA POW! Negro.

Now Fremantle has a new live music venue: The Aardvark, FKA The Odd Fellow. It’s in the Norfolk Hotel’s basement, so live music has been a staple for years, but now it’s got a fresh new look.

To celebrate the launch of the venue this week, Mandurah surf-rockers Good Doogs are taking to the stage in what is sure to be a rowdy, rocking gig to ring in the new digs.

Pretty snappy

Staying still in Fremantle — we promise we’re not trying to make amends after reporter Nathan Hondros’ argy-bargy with the port city — some of the best press photographs are currently on show at the WA Maritime Museum.

Featuring the finalists of the 2017 Walkley Awards, the photos will make you re-think how you view the world around you.

War, sport, politics — all sorts of moments have been captured and are on display to enjoy.

The museum is open from 9.30am to 5pm, normal admission fees apply.

Winter theatre

Back to Perth City — if you’re a regular visitor to the CBD you would have no doubt seen the big tent up in Forrest Chase, next to Bocelli’s.

Well, it’s a perfect space for adults and children to enjoy the fun of the theatre, with acrobats, comedians, jugglers and circus performers.

There are several shows on this weekend, including Baloonies, Snors Travelling Circus, Kidding Around and Falling Up.

All events are free, but tickets should be locked down in advance. Visit winterfesttheatre.oztix.com.au to grab yours.
