Nagpur: A 35-year-old post-graduate woman paid the price for trusting a man she had met through a marriage portal. The man allegedly fled with three tola gold and around Rs 21,000 cash a day after ‘marrying’ her in an informal ceremony at her home in Rana Pratap Nagar. The man, identified as Gurgaon-based Jugal Kishor Sharma, also fled with banking and financial details of the victim.
The woman, eldest of four sisters, not only lost her valuables and cash but her dream of setting up a home for the second time is also shattered. The victim had separated from her first husband after a bad marriage that lasted around five years. She had even registered an offence against her first husband following an attempt made by him on her. The offence was then registered at Rana Pratap Nagar police station. After the latest incident on July 10, the woman has now registered an offence with Bajaj Nagar police against Sharma for cheating and criminal breach of trust.
The victim had met Sharma in Delhi sometime ago after getting in touch through a marriage portal. Presenting himself as an ENT specialist, Sharma had claimed before the woman he worked for a central government hospital in Gurgaon. He also claimed to be a divorcee.
The woman, apart from fighting for justice in personal life, also has responsibility of the family. She had lost her father two decades ago. Now looking for a job, she had to freeze her bank accounts as Sharma may have fled with her financial details. The woman also claimed Sharma had deleted all information from her cellphone before sneaking away on the pretext of going for a meeting with his lawyer.
The victim said Sharma had come to her place on July 9. It was at his insistence that he ‘married’ her at the woman’s home symbolically by putting vermillion on her forehead and tying a mangalsutra around her neck in presence of her family and some friends. “Though he claimed to be a doctor, his behaviour was far from that of a respected professional. He even consumed alcohol and smoked incessantly,” she said describing Sharma.
“The following day (July 10), he managed to transfer cash from my mother’s and my accounts using my cellphone and also stole some cash from almirah before sneaking out of the home when I had gone to parlour. Sharma had told me he would go out for reserving railway tickets. Later, he did not respond to our repeated calls,” said the aggrieved woman. “I feel Sharma may have come as agent of my first husband. He had sent our marriage photographs to someone in Mumbai after the ceremony at home,” she said.
