AGRA/FIROZABAD: A 20-year-old woman was allegedly stripped naked, her limbs tied to a bed-frame and burned with a hot ladle by seven people, including her husband, for failing to bring a motorcycle in dowry. The crime was reported from a remote village in
Firozabad district. The woman has sustained serious injuries in her abdominal area.
According to police, the crime took place last Saturday but an FIR was lodged only on Thursday night after the victim managed to escape her in-laws’ house at Gadi Bahu village in the district. The woman, a native of Khushalpur village under Barhan police jurisdiction, was married to Ravi for the past five years. The couple did not have any children.
“I was sleeping in my room when my husband Ravi, his brothers Ramu and Bhola, sisters Anju and Manju and brothers-in-law Subhas and Ospal barged inside. They striped me naked and tied my hands and feet to the bed posts. They then burned my abdominal area with a hot ladle. Ravi was infuriated as my father was unable to give him a motorcycle in dowry. I managed to escape only on Thursday and contacted my parents,” said the woman.
Based on her written complaint, police have booked the seven people under IPC sections 489 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Sanjay Verma, Tundla circle officer, said, “The victim’s medical examination report has confirmed the burn injuries to her abdominal area. We will also look into why the police had failed to levy charges of sexual
harassment against the accused.”
