Action taken on plaints put forward by Justice Gill Commission

Punjab Government on Thursday said it has acted on 190 of the 337 complaints put forward by the Justice Mehtab Singh Gill Commission probing false cases registered under the previous SAD-BJP regime.

In its eighth interim report submitted to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh here, the Commission dismissed 216 complaints and allowed nine, taking the total number of accepted complaints so far to 337. Under Chief Minister’s strict instructions to expeditiously address every recommendation of the Commission, the Punjab Police has so far filed cancellation reports of the FIRs in 126 cases.

In seven cases, action has been taken against erring police officers, while compensation has been processed in 17 cases, as per the feedback received by the Commission from the nodal officers. Further, compliance of the orders has been made in 21 cases and proceedings under section 182 of the Indian Penal Code have been initiated in 19 cases.

The maximum FIR cancellations have been initiated in Ludhiana (13), Tarn Taran (12), Ferozepur and Amritsar (11 each).

Amritsar also has maximum of six cases in which action has been taken under Section 182 IPC, while Ludhiana has six cases in which compensation has been processed, followed by five in Amritsar.

As far as compliance is concerned, Kapurthala leads with eight cases. Ludhiana has seen the maximum cases (four) of action taken against erring police officers.

For grant of compensation to the aggrieved persons, reports have been prepared and forwarded to the Government for consideration of the quantum of compensation to be awarded, according to Justice (Retd) Mehtab Singh Gill.

On the remaining recommendations made by the Commission, the Nodal Officers are complying with the directions of the Commission to implement the same and are submitting the progress reports, he added.

In its eighth report, the Commission has dismissed 216 complaints and allowed nine, taking the total number of complaints accepted so far to 337. Of the total 1,299 complaints examined so far, 962 were dismissed on various grounds.
