Fan support spurs TDCA to give Tirunelveli venue ‘green’ facelift

TIRUNELVELI: Apart from outstation players, one of the topics of discussion in the third edition of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has been the number of matches being conducted in Tirunelveli and Dindigul.

Chennai, which generally hosts a lot of matches, has only four (three group-stage ties and final) this season. On the other hand, Tirunelveli and Dindigul have 14 matches each. Other than promoting cricket in districts, a reason cited for this move has been improved infrastructure.Tirunelveli’s designated venue — India Cements Cricket Ground in Sankarnagar — had witnessed quite the revamp duringthe second season; from an increase in galleries to using recycled water for pitch maintenance.

From the time it came to know about the increase in matches, Tirunelveli District Cricket Association (TDCA) has been mulling ways to better the experience for the audience, who have turned out in good numbers, even during weekday matches. One among them is an aim to be more environment-friendly.
“We have always been keen on making the ground more eco-friendly. Apart from increasing the size of the lawn around the stadium, we have increased the number of dustbins to 10, with each having a capacity of 650 litres. We have always wanted to minimise wastage of food. Hence we have decided to recycle leftovers,” explained TDCA vice president S Shanmugam.

On the infrastructure part, galleries have been rearranged in order to provide a better view. Sanitation too has been addressed with more toilets.“Next year, we are planning to have a separate gallery for VIPs. Earlier, the ticket counter was on the main road, which was an obstacle for the public. This time, we have shifted to the side. Also, we have built two more toilets behind the police gallery.”  

Though there is no team that represents Tirunelveli in TNPL, recent performances in inter-district tournaments have served as hope. “For the first time, Tirunelveli reached the finals of TNCA U-23 inter-district and senior-level tournaments. Our aim is to have a team in TNPL. It will benefit our player,” said TDCA secretary Ramkumar.

No outstation players, rules Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that outstation players are not allowed, upholding the CoA’s order. TNCA has urged CoA to reconsider.
