LUDHIANA: The Moti Nagar police booked five miscreants and their unidentified accomplices for allegedly opening an attack on a Special Task Force (
STF) team and thrashing three of their cops on Wednesday afternoon. The team was attacked when it stopped a youth for frisking, suspecting him to be a drug peddler. The youth called his accomplices and attacked the team.
The injured cops have been identified as assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sukhdev Singh, constables Manvir Singh and
Davinder Singh. They are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in
Civil Lines.
Following a tip-off, the STF team, comprising four cops led by ASI Sukhdev Singh, established a checkpoint at Transport Nagar. In his complaint to the police, constable Makhan Singh said when they stopped Kulwinder Singh, he indulged in heated arguments with them and called his accomplices. Soon, about 14 of his aides came in two cars. The accused pelted police team with stones, vandalized their vehicle and thrashed them, he added.
STF cops then called the Moti Nagar police, who rescued them. None of the accused could be nabbed.
STF in-charge sub-inspector Harbans Singh said, “ASI Sukhdev Singh’s eye is injured and two constables have sustained minor injuries. The team wanted to frisk Kulwinder, but he managed to escape.”
