After the cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur’s graduation degree from a Meerut University turned out to be “fake”, the Punjab Government is mulling over retaining the Indian Women’s T20 captain and Arjuna awardee on the post of the deputy superintendent of police (DSP).

For, the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is yet to approve her demotion from the DSP rank to the constable following the police inquiry that found her graduation degree from Meerut’s Chaudhary Charan Singh (CCS) University a sham.

Sources in the government informed The Pioneer that the orders regarding giving the “honorary DSP” to the 29-year-old cricketer from the state is likely to be issued by Wednesday evening. However, till the filing of this report, no such orders were issued.

Only four months, Harmanpreet was appointed DSP in the Punjab Police following her remarkable performance in the women’s Cricket World Cup the previous year. Earlier, she was employed as an office superintendent with the Western Railways.

For the job, she had submitted a graduation degree from CCS University, Meerut. The Punjab Police had got her degree verified from the Meerut varsity, which recently confirmed that the roll number and enrollment number mention mentioned in her final mark-sheet do not exist in its records.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party MLA and the Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Khaira urged the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder not to trivialize Harmanpreet’s achievements by demoting her to a constable’s post, and allow her to continue as DSP provisionally till she completes her graduation degree.

Khaira urged Capt Amarinder not to revert Harmanpreet to a constable’s post from her current position of DSP, in view of her controversial graduation degree, saying that it would amount to “humiliating a girl who has done Punjab and India proud by leading the Indian women cricket team”.
