LUCKNOW: A man impersonating an inspector in Special Task Force (STF) was arrested from Gomtinagar on Wednesday for extortion and harassment.

According to the police, the miscreant, identified as Ankur Singh of Gomtinagar, works with a private company. On July 6, he visited Lohia Park where he spotted a boy and a girl together and hatched a plan to extort money from them. He posed as a policeman and began questioning the couple. On finding out that the boy was a Muslim and the girl a Hindu, he allegedly began grilling the former even more intensely. When the boy objected to this, he threatened to send both to jail, and let them off only after extorting Rs 5,000 from them.

While leaving, he took the girl's cellphone number and subsequently started making calls to her. Troubled with his pestering and demands for coughing up more cash, the girl shared the incident with her father who contacted the senior STF officials.

Later, the phone number of the miscreant was put on surveillance and the miscreant was arrested.

Police spokesperson AK Singh said Singh has been booked uner charges of extortion and criminal intimidation.
